The Tolstoy Foundation Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Inc., is a not-for-profit
corporation, founded by Alexandra
Tolstoy, daughter of the famous author
and humanitarian Leo Tolstoy, and her
esteemed colleague, Tatiana Schaufuss,
to minister to the needs of Russian and
other Slavic-speaking people.
The Center, an easy 40-minute drive from Manhattan, Bergen and Fairfield
Counties, is a 96-bed facility providing skilled nursing, rehabilitation and
personal care services on a long-term or short-term basis. The facility,
nestled into the hillside of Rockland County's suburban hamlet of Valley
Cottage, offers a warm and homelike environment with bright, spacious
rooms looking out onto manicured grounds, blossoming fruit trees, and
borders of colorful flowers and shrubs.

The physical layout of the facility is highly unusual for a nursing home - all
Resident rooms are located on ground level with the administrative offices and
dining area located in the two storey portion of the building.
Tolstoy Foundation Rehabilitation and Nursing Center blends state-of-the-art nursing home care with a homelike atmosphere
where staff render their services, aware that each Resident is an individual,
entitled to be treated with dignity. The interdisciplinary team of caregivers
provides a Resident-centered approach with emphasis on meeting physical,
social, cultural and spiritual needs, thus ensuring the highest attainable quality
of life for each Resident. The Center encourages its Residents to maintain
independence within their functional limitations and provides the support
necessary to help them achieve their individual goals.
